Over the Misty Mountains Cold (Arrangement)

The Festival Statesmen is a reasonably large part of my life.  So naturally, the first song that I both wrote and directed for them was a fairly special piece for me.

This song appeared in the first Hobbit movie, as the Dwarves recount the story of how they lost their mountain home.  What captured me about the song was its sense of longing to return home - the need to belong.  I decided to essentially write a set of theme and variations on the two short verses that were presented in the movie, augmenting them with (some of) Tolkein's 26 other verses.  Together, they tell the story of the Dwarves rallying together to reclaim their mountain, in the process fighting Smaug - the villainous dragon who took it from them.

In 2014, we competed with this arrangement in the inaugural Aus-Aca National A Cappella Championship SA State Final - an Australia-wide a cappella competition modelled on the American The Sing-Off.  The Statesmen won the state final, and Over the Misty Mountains Cold was awarded Best Arrangement.  Later in the year, we toured this song to Pemulwuy! National Male Voice Festival in Brisbane, and recorded it as part of our first CD.

Featured soloists in the live performance are James Moffatt and Sama Aghili, and on the recording, Sama Aghili.
